Meet Kristin Grissom.

Founder | Strategic Consultant | Podcast Host | Leadership Deep Diver

I’ve always believed that the most meaningful leadership work happens beneath the surface. It’s the undercurrent, the emotions, the values, the culture, and the clarity (or confusion) that shapes every decision, every team dynamic, and every strategic direction.

For over 15 years, I lived that reality inside municipal parks and recreation. I built programs from the ground up, led change, led multi-division teams, navigated political landscapes, managed multimillion-dollar budgets, and guided communities through seasons of growth and change. I’ve been the director sitting in back-to-back meetings, the leader solving problems no one sees, the strategist trying to do the right work with limited resources and high expectations.
 

And somewhere in all of that, I became obsessed with what makes teams thrive, and what holds them back.
 

I learned that organizations and teams don’t fall apart because people aren’t trying. They struggle because they lack clarity, alignment, communication, and strategic direction that actually fits the humans doing the work. And that’s where I do my best work.

Why I Started Undercurrent Strategies.

Undercurrent Strategies was born from a simple but powerful belief:
 

When leaders understand what’s happening beneath the surface, in their culture, systems, finances, and communication, they can transform their organization from the inside out.
 

I started this consulting practice because I wanted to bring depth, clarity, and practicality to mission-driven organizations. I wanted to help leaders make strategic decisions with confidence. I wanted to create work plans that don’t sit on a shelf. And I wanted to support the people doing meaningful work, including public-sector and nonprofit directors, coordinators, and staff who give so much yet often feel stretched, overwhelmed, or unseen.
 

My approach blends the best of both sides of my brain, the strategic and analytical thinker and the intuitive, playful, people-focused leader. I can build a logic model and read a room with the same accuracy. I can make KPIs feel simple and make a team feel safe enough to tell the truth. I can design a financial sustainability framework and also help your staff rediscover joy and purpose in their work.

A Personal Note

I believe deeply in this work because I’ve lived it. I know what it feels like to lead through uncertainty, to build something from nothing, to support a team that feels like family, and to navigate complex, red-tape systems that weren’t built for speed or ease.
